Green IT 'can be used to reduce carbon emissions'

Green IT practices serve to help reduce the carbon footprint of businesses, an industry commentator has asserted.

John Buckley, managing director of Carbon Footprint, explains that such benefits can be achieved through a range of practices.

These may include allowing employees to carry out their duties remotely - such as working from home - to allow them to reduce their carbon emissions by not travelling to work.

Video conferencing and web-based meetings can also be used to reduce the need for offsite engagements, Mr Buckley continues.

"IT is a great enabler to help reduce carbon emissions and at the same time can reduce costs for the company in reductions in travel expenses and staff travel time," he concludes.

According to figures from Zero Carbon Footprint, a personal computer can consumer 200-300 Watts of power and even when in power-saving mode can still emit almost 220 kilos of CO2 per year.
