Many Wi-Fi assumptions 'incorrect'

A number of common assumptions made about the Wi-Fi industry in the last year have been shown to be myths, according to ABI Research.

Stan Schatt, vice-president and research director at the organisation note that one widely-held belief is that independent, or "fat", access points are now dead.

However, he contends: "These products are far from dead and in fact still represented a third (34 per cent) of all access points shipped in 2007."

A further industry myth is that enterprises are driving the equipment market, the research organisation states.

But, Mr Schatt says that while the media focuses on stories such as the large-scale deployment of Wi-Fi hardware at firms such as Coca-Cola and General Electric, 95 per cent of access point shipments made in 2007 were to small businesses and consumers.

With a history dating back to 1990, ABI Research provides analytical coverage of the information technology, connectivity and communication industry.
