Control scope creep, expert urges
Project managers should aim to keep scope creep under control, a sector commentator has asserted.
Writing in her blog on online resource About.com, Jacci Howard Bear explains that scope creep is described by industry analyst John Reh as "the piling up of small changes that by themselves are manageable, but in aggregate are significant".
She suggests that while one small alteration will not significantly impact a project, 20 will.
As such, Ms Howard Bear recommends that managers obtain as many details about a project as possible, ensuring that both they and the client understand the scope of the task to the greatest extent possible.
She concludes by noting that if people fail to control scope creep then they risk losing both time and money as the project moves towards its deadline.
In related news, sector commentator Bill Stronge recently wrote on online resource TechRepublic that thorough scope management can allow a team to deliver a project in an effective manner.
