More than 1 billion PCs in use worldwide: Gartner
There are more than a billion PCs in use around the world and this figure is set to double by 1014, according to Gartner.
Analysts estimated that the worldwide installed rate of PCs is growing at 12 per cent annually.
There is a heavy concentration of installed PCs in mature markets, but Gartner expects emerging markets to claim an increasingly larger share of the world's installed base.
Commenting, George Schiffer, research director at Gartner, said: "There's a startling difference in per capita PC penetration between mature and emerging markets.
"Of course, much of this difference reflects the disparity in average living standards between mature and emerging markets.
"But, rapid economic development across emerging markets is not only narrowing the disparity in average living standards, it's closing the difference in per capita PC penetration between mature and emerging markets."
Gartner expects emerging markets to account for 70 per cent of the next billion units installed.
