ComputerWeekly.com: Virtualisation can help reduce emissions, cut costs

The uptake of virtualisation could help the government reduce carbon emissions as well as save money, a spokesperson for ComputerWeekly.com has said.

Central government departments have pledged to reduce energy consumption and become carbon neutral by 2012.

The spokesman explained: "The more sort of advanced thing they could do before most private businesses is virtualisation … You've got ten of the old style servers running on one actual physical server – so it's quite a clever way of using software."

He added: "The big banks are doing it and although it's a big investment you could maybe get your money back in about three quarters of a year. It pays for itself in energy savings and hardware savings."

Recent research by the Yankee Group revealed that 72 per cent of businesses in 20 countries have already deployed virtualisation solutions or plan to do so soon.

Disaster recovery, backup, server and licensing consolidation, which lower total cost of ownership and accelerate return on investment, were the factors that were driving organisations to virtualise their data centres, the survey found.
