Green IT is a 'global trend'

The deployment of green IT solutions is a "global phenomenon", one industry expert has claimed.

According to analyst firm IDC, the term 'carbon footprint' is rising on executives' agenda and will continue to impact the business world in the foreseeable future.

"Within the broader framework of corporate social responsibility and the focus on the environment in general, green IT is a global phenomenon, with enterprises seeking out IT suppliers whose products and solutions are more energy-efficient, more material-efficient, less hazardous, designed for greater recyclability and supported by end-of-life recycling programs," explained Amit Gupta, country manager of IDC New Zealand.

However, he added that despite the "hype" surrounding the issue, "there has been very little information on how it is really being perceived by end-user organisations, and more importantly, if end-users are really acting on going green, what the key drivers for green IT investments are".

Recently, analyst firm Gartner advised that green IT – along with cloud computing, social computing platforms, video telepresence and microblogging – should be strongly considered for adoption by IT executives in the next ten years.
