Data explosion increasing compliance gap, warns Forrester

Organisations are exposing themselves to increasing risk and costs as a result of "inadequate database archiving strategies", a new report by Forrester has warned.

The analyst firm found that nearly two thirds (64 per cent) of firms have over half their databases on expensive tier 1 storage, while 20 per cent of data centre infrastructure spend is to support data growth.

In addition, the survey discovered that 27 per cent of enterprises have 50 or more terabyte production databases.

Noel Yuhanna, principal analyst at Forrester Research, said that database archiving "often fails to get the attention it needs compared to other critical activities related to production databases and data warehouses".

He added that an archival system is "critical" when businesses need to access archived information regarding compliance issues.

Database auditing and real-time protection are "necessities to meet regulatory compliance requirements and mitigate risk against various types of threats to enterprise databases", the report said.
