Understanding business helps CIOs survive economic downturn
CIOs who understand how technology supports business and can communicate this to senior management are "invaluable" during an economic downturn.
This is the view of an article in Computer Weekly that suggests IT executives are in a "stronger position … to improve their corporate standing" compared to many other business leaders.
However, the article points out that CIOs must be able to "translate the benefits of IT" in a way that senior managers can understand.
"If a CIO understands this, then IT is a business enabler and not a cost and can become a competitive advantage," Matt Smith, director of UK regions at Harvey Nash, tells the website.
"When there is nervousness around the economy there is more scrutiny around projects and budgets so you need a water-tight business case."
Earlier this month, one industry expert warned that the IT sector would be hit by the credit crunch in 2009.
Richard Holway, a former director at technology research company Ovum, told Computer Weekly that the sector was getting ready to face a recession of two per cent next year. ![]()
