Business leaders 'ignoring' green IT

Few business leaders are using IT to address environmental issues even though nearly three-fourths believe that technology can play a crucial role in combating climate change, a new poll has found.

The study by virtual network operator TFM Networks found that found that 70 per cent of senior managers are concerned about rising oil prices.

However, only half of these suggested that they had actually tried to combat this by developing strategies to minimise their carbon footprint.

IT was used as a tool for change by only 30 per cent of respondents.

"Technology represents one important way in which businesses can effectively reduce their carbon footprint, overheads and exposure to rising fuel prices," said Stewart Yates, managing director of TFM Networks.

"Simple steps such as IP-based video conferencing and flexible working can reduce fuel expenditure and improve overall efficiency by removing the need for unnecessary travel."

Recently, analyst firm Gartner suggested that IT can play a key role in dealing with environmental issues within firms and across industries.

This trend will reach its peak within two to five years, Gartner added.
