Flexible working 'must create common purpose'

Companies using flexible working arrangements must ensure they are about more than convenience and are "getting the best out of people", it has been claimed.

Business applications such as online timesheets have made it easier for businesses to adopt flexible policies in recent years - but according to a survey from Vodafone, some younger workers are concerned that working at home could ultimately lead to greater isolation.

According to the company's figures, 20 per cent of 16 to 25-year-olds currently in employment believe the rise of flexible working could erode a company's sense of community.

Speaking on behalf of Vodafone, business psychologist David Cumberbatch commented that businesses must therefore develop remote working arrangements that take individual needs into account in order to create a "common purpose" among employees.

"It is about meeting the needs and getting the best out of people flexibly so that everyone is working towards the same end goal," he remarked.

Vodafone is world's biggest mobile telecommunications group, with operations spanning 27 different countries.
