Small business owners 'putting extra day into working week'
Small business owners are clocking up the equivalent of an extra day's work on their weekly timesheets in an effort to counterbalance the damaging effects of the recession, it has been claimed.
Entrepreneur thinktank the Tenon Forum came up with the figure after its research indicated that one-quarter of owners have upped their hours in response to the financial downturn, Smallbusiness.co.uk reports.
On average, bosses are putting in an additional eight hours a week, it said.
Carl Jackson of Tenon Recovery said the results are no surprise, given the testing conditions facing many UK businesses.
According to the thinktank, one-quarter of small companies have already been forced to cut their workforce because of the economic downturn, while approximately the same amount again are thinking about slashing wages.
Nevertheless, despite the undoubted challenges confronting the sector, another recent survey found that small business owners do not feel overly-stressed.
The report by Premierline Direct said 82 per cent believe becoming an entrepreneur has made them less tense than when they worked for someone else.
