Adoption of high-speed broadband 'crucial' to knowledge economy
The government and business should work together to encourage and aid the adoption of high-speed broadband, which is seen as an "absolute must" for the continued development of the UK's knowledge economy, an expert has said.
Dr Chris Doyle, an associate at the Centre for Management Under Regulation at Warwick Business School, told the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum's Digital Britain seminar that the government would not necessarily have to pay for the development of high-speed broadband, but rather it could lend a "helping hand" in the market from time to time.
He added that Lord Stephen Carter, minister for communications, technology and broadcasting at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, has already expressed the view that "embracing the digital future is a must" for the UK.
Dr Doyle noted that a widespread switchover to super-fast broadband services may well improve productivity across a range of businesses, from e-retailers to firms using online timesheets and online project management.
