HMRC tax support service 'a huge success'

A new fast-track service designed to support companies that need more time to settle their tax bills is proving a "huge success", users of time billing software may be interested to learn.

The Business Payment Support Service (BPSS) was unveiled by the chancellor during November's pre-Budget report.

It allows businesses to quickly agree affordable terms with HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC) over the phone.

East Ham MP and financial secretary to the Treasury Stephen Timms hailed the service as a "huge success", adding that it has already provided a "cashflow boost" worth over £1 billion to British businesses.

"I would urge any business anticipating or experiencing difficulties paying their tax to call the helpline and get a quick response tailored to their specific needs," he added.

HMRC was formed in April 2005 by the merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise Departments.

It is the body responsible for collecting and administering direct and indirect UK taxes, including corporation tax, income tax and National Insurance contributions.
