Time management key to successful restructuring

With the current economic climate forcing many businesses to restructure or even reduce their headcount, experts have said that good time management can be a crucial factor in getting productivity back up to speed once resources have been cut.

Sanjiv Anand and Bhaskar Menon of Cedar Management Consulting told gulfnews.com that the downturn means many employees are being asked to take on more work, join new departments and learn new skills.

It is therefore important that firms clearly outline new roles, expectations and responsibilities, as well as the support employees can expect to receive.

They should also adjust resource planning to ensure productivity targets are both "measurable and realistic". This could involve technology such as project planning software to improve time management or the use of "process optimisation" to ensure the firm avoids unnecessary duplication and overlaps.

"Remember, working in lean organisations is never painless. Structure the process well and at least you won't have more problems on the way," the experts said.

Earlier this week, independent consultant Sterling Camden advised businesses to avoid "interrupt-based" time management by allocating separate time slots to working on projects and dealing with queries.
