Flexible working 'could help' during recession

Flexible working could help firms survive the recession, it has been claimed.

Introducing staff resources such as online project management software could also improve efficiency, director of Wisework Peter Thomson suggests.

He told eWeekEurope: "Smarter working practices can save costs as well as improve efficiency.

"Technology solutions can make smaller teams more productive and the small to medium-sized enterprises that are more agile are the ones most likely to survive the downturn."

Research by Wisework carried out in September 2008 found that the number of people 'teleworking' had risen over the last few years.

Figures indicated that last year almost half of employers (48 per cent) offered flexible working to staff.

Commenting on the findings John Cridland, director-general at the Confederation of British Industry, claimed that the boundaries of the traditional nine-to-five job are becoming "blurred".

Nearly all (93 per cent) of the 513 employers that responded to the survey claimed that they offered at least one form of flexible working.
