PFI project focus for new report

Hospital private finance initiative (PFI) project management will come under scrutiny in a new report by the National Audit Office (NAO).

Around 70 hospital PFI projects have been launched across England over the last nine years.

A new report, announced by the NAO earlier this week, will consider whether or not project management targets have been met through these schemes.

The report, due to be published in 2010, will also consider whether these schemes have been delivered in line with best practice.

It will also consider the robustness of the NHS systems in place to manage private sector providers.

The announcement follows the conclusion of an investigation into the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust by the Healthcare Commission.

Emergency healthcare, leadership and management were all found to be lacking at the hospital.

Earlier this month, the NAO concluded that the National Offender Management Service project IT system had been hampered by poor management.
