Flexible working and SaaS to 'take off' during downturn

A majority of companies intend to use flexible working during the current downturn, according to a recent survey.

Three-quarters (75 per cent) of businesses intend to use the internet to enable flexible working, the Easynet Connect research reveals.

A further 23 per cent intend to begin using online software-as-a-service (SaaS), such as staff scheduling software, to help save on costs.

More than half (52 per cent) expect the web to create a level playing field with larger competitors.

Chris Stening, managing director of Easynet Connect, believes that the internet will be the "critical difference" between this recession and the last one.

He said: "The internet has meant that businesses are much better equipped this time around.

"In the early 1990s we were a world away from e-commerce, online marketing, or having a mobile workforce, let alone using cloud computing or holding video conferences with customers on the other side of the world."

A survey by the Chartered Institute of Marketing published in November 2008 indicated that two-thirds of respondents believe that marketing will be key to their organisation's success during the downturn.
