Flexible working is 'extremely good option'
In light of recent developments in the automotive industry and the pay cuts and freezes across industrial sectors everywhere, people should be more open to flexible working, according to a recognition expert.
Jon Terry, a partner and the head of reward at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said that many businesses may overlook all of the options they have available to them, sticking to the time-honoured traditional cutback methods such as pay freezes and redundancies.
"When under cost pressure, it would be a mistake for companies to make the leap from freezing pay and other people cost savings to reducing headcount without looking at flexible working, workforce planning and performance management options."
He said that with the help of something such as timesheet software, flexible working could be tailored to the requirements of each company which wishes to adopt it, adding that a lean workforce could be retained without compromising the sales and abilities of a company.
According to the Industrial Relations Service this week, it was revealed that the number of cases involving pay freezes in the workplace has risen sharply over the last 12 months.
