Flexible working extension 'very important development'

The recent development in government legislation which extends the right to request flexible working has been welcomed by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Brendan Barber, the TUC's general secretary, stated that the changes are very much welcome and will allow those with children under the age of 16 to meet the needs of their family with more success.

He said employers who receive any such requests in the immediate months ought to consider them seriously and look into making them as easy as possible to fulfil in the current environment.

It also perhaps highlights the need for companies to invest in timesheet and expense management software to make the changes with greater ease and in a more cost-effective way.

Up to two million employees could benefit from the new law, according to Mr Barber, who noted that a major proportion of the sector is made up of part-time, low-paid women.

The Employment Act 2008 contains these governing laws and it aims to make sure that all employees know their entitlements to the likes of national minimum wage.
