Staff 'could be rewarded with flexible working'

Managers who want to solve motivation issues in the office will not find a universal solution to their problem, though flexible working may be a great incentive, an expert has claimed.

Fresh Business Thinking columnist Ian Rummels said that morale-boosting schemes must aim broadly when satisfying large groups, with flexible working being something that appeals to most people in one way or another.

It is also may be much easier to implement should a business consider investing in hosted systems such as timesheet software.

He explained that businesses may want to look into restructuring work and pay schemes, with Mr Rummels emphasising that many people could be willing to take a wage cut for a more useful incentive such as flexible working, extra holidays or gym membership.

Despite the benefits they can bring to both employers and staff, incentives must be used correctly, Brian Capon of the British Bankers' Association asserted, as rewards for short-term performance may impact on the quality of service a company provides.
