Value of SaaS 'to soar'

The software-as-a-service (SaaS) industry will become worth a lot more during this year due to the increasing implementation by companies across the world, it has been stated.

Programs including project management and time billing software will help the sector grow to a market value of $9.6 billion (£6.3 billion), according to the latest research by leading IT consultancy Gartner.

Research director at the company Sharon Mertz said that change is being forced by smaller budgets for IT applications, while many businesses have expressed their desire to pay for much more specialised technology, cutting down on superfluous programs.

Ms Mertz continued: "Many enterprises are further encouraged by the fact that with SaaS, responsibility for continuous operation, backups, updates and infrastructure maintenance, shifts risk and resource requirements from internal IT to vendors or service providers."

Interacting with 60,000 clients worldwide, Gartner employs 650 expert analysts and 500 consultants to match their demands in all aspects of IT research.
