Future will be 'strong' for online businesses

Providing the correct technology is deployed, businesses will be savvier online, with the industry giving the impression of universal optimism about the future to one leading writer in the UK.

Don Davis, the editor of Internet Retailer, explained that retailers online continue to grow, with small business management software such as customer relationship management (CRM) being a particular helping hand in this success.

Bigger investments are still being delayed though, he added, as major expenditures needing upfront fees and infrastructure costs are not currently viable - unlike outsourced software such as CRM and project management, which require a subscription only.

"Many are being cautious in terms of buying and in some cases they have put off major investments but they're also watching carefully for signs that the economy as a whole is rebounding so that they don't get caught with too little inventory," Mr Davis added.

According to the recent comScore index, the best-performing sales areas online include video games, sport, fitness and books.
