Firms advised to update ERP systems

Businesses are being urged to update their enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to ensure they stay up to date with the latest developments.

The systems can be complex to adapt and upgrade so firms must ensure they are continually updated, advises Bo Lykkegaard, program director of European enterprise applications at IDC.

He warns that companies that do not have adequate ERP systems will not be able to gather a transparent view of their business.

"The result is the customer with an aging, customised ERP version is not able to take advantage of new modules or other innovations from their vendor," he stated.

Mr Lykkegaard explained that some firms have accounting in one installation and things such as procurement and CRM in a newer, non-customised application, each with their own database.

Figures from Accenture reveal that firms in the UK lag behind their American counterparts in terms of use of enterprise systems.
