Cloud computing will 'likely serve SMEs'
Small businesses with large IT departments may want to consider the benefits of adopting cloud computing initiatives in the workplace, a leading technology expert has asserted.
Michael Dean, the head of marketing at the National Computing Centre, said that he thinks outsourcing, with cloud computing and software-as-a-service in particular, will become increasingly popular with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
However, he commented with a degree of doubt, stating that it will not be as fast a transition as certain vendors of small business management software may say.
Mr Dean continued: "Cloud computing is in its early days and not suitable for all but this situation will change.
"SMEs that typically have 'off the shelf' IT requirements will see a lot of benefit in the cloud."
According to the the Ardent Solutions SME Business Technology Report 2009, 23 per cent of SMEs admit that limitations on IT budgets could have a negative impact on the business through loss of competitive advantage, highlighting the importance of small business management software.
