Internet is 'fourth utility'

After gas, electricity and water, broadband internet is the fourth utility a house needs in the modern day, according to a communications expert.

Edd Dawson, the managing director at broadband.co.uk, said that most people likely consider it as essential on a personal level, with businesses also particularly dependent on it, especially those using time billing software or other hosted applications.

He continued: "It's part of the telecoms package now and I think it's reached that point for the majority of people already and in five years I think it'll probably be even more [essential]."

Mr Dawson also noted that there are children now who have always grown up with the internet and this is a fact of life which cannot be ignored, mimicking other major trends before it which now seem commonplace such as mobile phones.

Mr Dawson's comments follow those from Gordon Brown which came after the publication of the Digital Britain report.

The prime minister explained the study was "about giving the country the tools to succeed and lead the way in the economy of the future".
