SaaS can 'help companies cut IT costs'

The amount of money which a business can save through using software-as-a-service (SaaS) may surprise many businesses using solid in-house systems, it has been explained.

Product strategy and development director at Genesis Communications Mark Seemann said businesses are increasingly on the look-out for hosted IT solutions in the recession for this very reason.

He continued: "Customers taking hosted IT solutions do not need to purchase and maintain costly server equipment and never need to worry about purchasing software upgrades."

Mr Seemann added that set-up costs, installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance are completely eliminated by things such as hosted time billing software as only a monthly subscription is needed.

He concluded that uptake of hosted IT will likely peak in the coming days as larger companies will look into investing in such a strategy.

A study published at the beginning of the year by Forrester Research predicted that software investment will do better than average in spite of the recession, with global purchases of software products totalling (£239 billion) in 2009, the same figure as 2008.
