Cloud computing users 'must target specific functions'
For a move to cloud computing to work, businesses must target certain abilities from their software before adopting it, according to a new report by Gartner.
Central to the recommendations of the organisation was that the use of such things as project management software be scalable and elastic, allowing it to be tailored to both the individual user and the number of computers it is used on.
This will also allow them to demand added services or remove resources should they not be necessary in future.
Vice-president and Gartner fellow David Mitchell Smith said: "The degree to which the service exhibits all these characteristics indicates how much it adheres to the cloud computing model.
"One must examine a combination of these attributes to evaluate cloud services. Focusing on one attribute in isolation is not recommended."
A recent Gartner survey also discovered that spending on IT security has not slipped in the face of the recession, finding that revenues in the industry are up by 18.6 per cent.
