Universal broadband 'must meet modern demands'
The UK's universal broadband network needs to keep up with modern demands, according to the editor-in-chief at ISPreview.co.uk Mark Jackson.
A new inquiry investigating the government's target to make broadband access universally accessible at speeds of 2Mbps was launched last month.
Meanwhile, the Commission for Rural Communities indicated that broadband is bringing social and economic advantages to rural communities, providing the capacity to conduct online project management and other flexible working strategies away from the office.
However, Mr Jackson warned that universal broadband needs to keep up with emerging internet demands if it is to be worth it.
He criticised the government's focus on broadband download speeds, while other areas "such as the need for low latency connections" gained little attention.
Mr Jackson said: "There's little point in making 2Mbps available to everybody if it ends up being an expensive and highly restrictive mess of a service that is incapable of keeping up with modern demands.
"It's also worth remembering that many rural residents often have lower incomes than those living in urban areas due to the lack of highly paid local jobs."
