Application development 'cannot be ignored'

Timesheet software, resource planning and other application developments should not be ignored by businesses, it has been suggested.

Speaking to IT Pro, Gartner research vice-president Paolo Malinverno explained that it was no longer a choice over using service orientated architecture (SOA).

Mr Malinverno said: "The rest aren't under so much cost pressure, but are still preparing [their SOA strategies] now so they can be first out of the blocks when the [economic] downturn ends."

He suggested that businesses should begin by piloting a new technology and measuring its success before making a purchase.

Mr Malinverno also suggested reusing existing products rather than creating new ones.

Technology specialist Baseline recently claimed that businesses can save time by taking advantage of software-as-a-service (SaaS).

A website slideshow by the firm also indicated that businesses stand to gain more than one benefit from SaaS, with application efficiency also being very high.
