Employees 'becoming more flexible'

Resource planning is becoming more flexible in the recession as businesses attempt to right themselves, research has shown.

Overtime has become the norm for almost 50 per cent of staff since the start of the financial crisis, according to research by BT.

Most employees were found to be working an average of seven hours extra per week - equal to around £200 million-worth of extra work.

Over a third (37 per cent) admitted to putting in extra hours to cope with growing workloads, while four in ten said the situation had been worsened by staff not having the correct tools to carry out their job.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, explained that the findings show just what lengths "employees are willing to go to" to help their company through the downturn.

He said: "Employers should look to match these efforts by equipping staff with what they need to become more efficient.

"Financial incentives may not be an option, but companies should consider how working practices can eliminate wasted time and boost productivity."

Chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Dr John Philpott indicated recently that redundancies could rise even once the recovery begins, which may further impact online project management.
