SaaS could 'transform' IT services adoption

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) has the potential to cause "massive" changes to the way businesses purchase IT, it has been claimed.

Achieving this kind of widespread use will require adopting new standards to ensure consistent delivery of SaaS products, according to vice-president of Parallels Soeren von Varchmin.

His comments follow research by Gartner, which indicated that more than half of organisations intend to maintain SaaS spending, such as on resource planning, over the next two years.

Mr Von Varchmin said: "Success is best achieved when the industry implements technology and processes that ensure reliability, breadth and quality of services.

"At the most basic level this means adopting open standards that ensure SaaS applications are delivered in a consistent way."

The Gartner survey also revealed that organisations ranked their satisfaction with SaaS services as 4.74 on a seven-point scale, on average.

However, UK organisations were slightly more critical, ranking satisfaction at an average of 4.34.
