Enterprise resource scheduling can 'save tons of CO2'

The use of hosted software-as-a-service (SaaS) in the workplace can cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new study.

Independent research firm Greenspace studied a leading organisation's SaaS offerings and found that it was able to cut down on carbon dioxide levels by up to 423,000 metric tons a year, with the average user saving $10,000 (£6,068) on electricity alone.

However, the usefulness of getting resource scheduling or customer relationship management could result in savings of up to $100,000 (£60,680) in a year following deductions of other in-house costs such as software licences, maintenance and hardware.

The 423,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide was ruled equivalent to nearly one million barrels of oil or the average electricity consumption of 56,000 homes per year.

Last week, a report by ZDNet Asia praised small business management software such as SaaS for its ability to support offices which had shorter weeks or a demand for flexible working.
