Internet speeds 'could affect business management software'

The average internet speed is nowhere near the speed advertised by providers of the service from across the UK, it has emerged.

Ofcom has released the results of its most recent survey, finding that while the average broadband speed in the UK stood at 4.1Mbit/s, the typical speed purveyed by sellers is 7.1Mbit/s.

This is due to a loophole in the descriptive tendencies of providers, with many of them advertising the speed as being "up to" the headline number.

The news could cause many to consider the dependability of their internet connection, with a number of firms requiring good connections in the office and at home to support the potentially money-saving benefits which small business management software can bring.

At the bottom of the table was Tiscali, which was only able to deliver between 3.2 and 3.7Mbit/s when 8Mbit/s was advertised, while O2 was the best with a sustained speed of between 4.1 and 5.1Mbit/s.

Virgin Media delivered 8.1 to 8.7Mbit/s on its 10Mbit/s service.

Responding to the results, Michael Phillips, the product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said that the results gave "a big thumbs up for Virgin Media" but shamed many others.
