Managers 'must have good communication skills'
Managers must be aware of what kinds of communication are best used in certain circumstances, one expert advises.
Whether they are sending out a memo on updated business management software or dealing with a disciplinary issue, bosses should carefully consider their choice of communication, suggests Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute.
"An awareness of the age and gender effects in internet usage may alert managers to the need to be inclusive in their communication, using personal as well as computer-mediated channels," she commented.
Managers must be careful not to overlook people who do not use online communications as much, or in the same way, as other staff, Ms Spellman added.
Younger workers may have a better understanding of the internet and new media and be more open to different ways of utilising it, unlike senior colleagues who might not be as well-placed to make the technology perform for them, she concluded.
