Time billing spreadsheets 'must be used with care'

Atlantic Global is urging any firm that uses spreadsheets as part of its time tracking and time billing processes to do so with care.

There are dangers to using spreadsheets, explains finance director Rupert Hutton.

"Even small companies rely on deciphering large amounts of complex data these days and anything that encourages people to work in 'silos' en-mass cannot be a good thing," he commented.

In its latest white paper, Atlantic Global gives the example of a North American power generation company, which lost several million dollars because of a simple spreadsheet error.

Spreadsheets should not be allowed to get out of control, as they can hinder decision-making processes, the firm advises.

Rather than trying to keep up with a growing number of spreadsheets, and the time lost dealing with them, firms should look to commercial business management systems, Atlantic Global suggests.
