IT executives 'supportive' of private clouds
One in four IT executives (28 per cent) are planning to deploy a private cloud in 2009, a new survey shows.
Increased workload and resource planning demands on businesses are driving this adoption, according to Platform Computing, which carried out the poll.
Firms are also under pressure to cut costs across IT departments, although IT executives are positive about the efficiency benefits of cloud computing for businesses.
Four in ten cite improved efficiency, while close to a fifth (17 per cent) believe that the technology can help to cut costs, although over three-quarters (76 per cent) of IT executives do not feel that business decision-makers appreciate the potential of private clouds.
Randy Clark, chief marketing officer of Platform Computing, explained that cloud computing offers a "cost-effective infrastructure model".
He said: "If enterprises are to reap the full benefits of private clouds, the IT function will evolve to become a business service partner to the business.
"While this transition will not happen overnight it's hugely important and will require internal leadership and world-class vendor support."
Research by Greenspace last month indicated that hosted software-as-a-service can cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
