Flexible working initiative 'must value technology's role'

Flexible working needs a company to be fully committed to the cause in not only an active, human resources way but through technologies to support the initiative, it is believed.

According to Fresh Business Thinking, cutting corners "can be counterproductive" as staff can become very used to a certain standard of computer specification or software, and many of them may be already using a specific mobile phone or PDA while on the job.

It highlighted the need for good project management or time billing software, adding: "As far as possible, keep things the same for the whole organisation - the value of easy operability far outweighs any savings made using cut-down versions of software and services."

Domestic factors of workers must also be addressed but also taken into account when switching to a flexible working model, as employment commitments within the home can be affected by the staff member's personal commitments, it added.

According to the government's Directgov facility, it is simply "good business sense" to offer the provision of flexible working as it can improve morale and productivity.
