Flexible working 'more available than people think'

New research from the government said the majority of adults - 82 per cent in all - aren’t aware that carers are legally entitled to ask their employer for flexible working arrangements.

Minister for women and equality Harriet Harman said that given the number of people over 85 years old is expected to double, the importance of family care also underlines the need for flexible working.

She added that people who have caring responsibilities should not be afraid to ask for flexible working, given that 91 per cent of all requests are accepted, particularly with those using time billing and project management software which can be accessed from elsewhere online.

Ms Harman continued: "This government recognises the importance of this family care, and those who go out to work as well as care for older relatives. That is why we brought in the right to request flexible working for those who care for older and disabled relatives."

The government hopes that during the next 10 years, all carers who want to work will be able to do so - something it outlined in National Carers' Strategy in 2008.
