Paternity leave rights 'will affect employer organisation'

New paternity leave rights are set to help families, providing more choice and flexibility to parents, the government has announced.

The scheme has been designed to minimise administrative burdens on business and will give employers time to adjust through a delayed introduction for parents of children due on or after April 3rd 2011.

Chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute Ruth Spellman highlighted the need for administrative changes during this period, perhaps hinting at the need for the likes of online timesheets and time billing software to deal with flexible working.

She explained: "Yes, the introduction of increased paternity leave could create administrative challenges for UK business, but the positive impact far outweighs any negative.

"Ultimately, the focus should be on the end results and quality of work as opposed to seeking conformity across individual working patterns."

Ms Spellman added that rule changes are also a big help to employers as the current skills shortage will result in more flexible working, meaning that companies can widen the talent pool they recruit from.
