Growth of business management software 'turns computer into terminal'
The use of computers is changing in the workplace, it has been said, with software-as-a-service such as project management software being a driving force behind this.
In a recent article published with Reuters, Robert Houghton of Greener World Media explained that in the current economic climate, businesses are focusing on reusing old computers and reducing investment in new systems.
He explained that many companies realise that software can still run quite well on old computers and as a result, many are turning to such things as resource scheduling software and cutting down on costs by converting systems to "little more than internet terminals".
Mr Houghton concluded: "Our efforts to cut back in tough times have revealed just how strategic old-fashioned virtues can be in the digital age; thrift is the new, new (sustainable) thing."
It follows comments from Saideep Raj, who told Computerworld UK that SaaS is more flexible and usable than server-based technology.
