Parents 'need flexible working'

Flexible working is needed as it gives individuals a "chance to shine", according to the winner of Innovator of the Year at the recent Specsavers Everywoman in Retail Awards.

Wendy Hallett, the managing director of concession operator Hallett Retail, said that juggling a full-time family life and getting the gong showed the power that flexible working had given her and her colleague.

She openly accepted that flexible working legislation is a concern for smaller organisations and their operations, though it is better to embrace it with online timesheets and other business management software to enhance productivity and performance instead of hindering the company in question.

Ms Hallet concluded: "Flexibility at work should not just be the prerogative of working mothers. A lack of flexibility afforded to working fathers can make it more difficult for working parents in general."

Her comments follow a new pledge by Conservative Party leader David Cameron to extend flexible working should the Tories get into power.
