Digital Britain will 'target several villages'

The government's Digital Britain strategy could see the emergence of several 'virtual villages' as a preparation for the wider roll-out of super-fast broadband, according to a new report.

In an exclusive interview with the Times at the Innovate 09 technical showcase, lead technologist with the government-funded Technology Strategy Board Nick Appleyard said the organisation is seeking a community with certain assets that can be upgraded with five years worth of internet development.

The creation of such a system would undoubtedly benefit those working with programmes such as resource scheduling software, speeding up operations even further.

He continued: "The intention is not that this should reach the scale that it becomes a significant presence in the market place.

"It needs to be big enough to get statistically useful information out of it and we think that scale is a few thousand people, a small community."

He added that his expectation is that we will end up with two-to-three "discrete locations" around the UK in which infrastructure can be analysed.

Innovate 09 took place at the Business Design Centre in London on Tuesday October 13th.
