Gartner: Cloud computing is top strategic technology
If a business wants to invest in truly strategic technology, it ought to look to cloud computing as a means of solving a lot of its overriding issues, according to a new study.
Gartner revealed in its Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2010 that cloud computing - a platform which provides time billing software and resource scheduling software, for example - is particularly great as it can be "exploited in a variety of ways" in order to develop an application or a solution.
While it does not eliminate IT solutions costs, Gartner accepted that it can still re-arrange some and reduce many others.
David Cearley, the vice-president and analyst at Gartner, said that companies need to factor technologies such as cloud computing into strategic planning processes, making "deliberate decisions" about it during the next couple of years.
"However, this does not necessarily mean adoption and investment in all of the technologies. They should determine which technologies will help and transform their individual business initiatives," he added.
Earlier this week, Gartner forecast that IT spending will rebound in 2010 with around 3.3 per cent growth, following its worst year ever in 2009.
