Software licensing 'could be made obsolete' by SaaS

The likes of project management software and online time billing could spell the end of software licensing forever, according to an expert.

Sara Yirrell, the editor of CRN, explained that the changes in technology which are turning companies to online environments - most notably software-as-a-service (SaaS) - could result in the end of fixed-term licences, which are very costly for a number of businesses.

However, hosted software has licensing and updates included in the face price of the offering, making it much easier for businesses to take exactly how much they are paying into account each time a subscription is renewed.

She concluded: "Of course, this could all be wrong¬ but the calibre of people making these predictions does make it hard to ignore. Is it now a case of adapt-or-die for the major licensing players?"

The organisation which oversees cases where software licences are not purchased is the Business Software Alliance, which is active in 80 countries and operates 11 dedicated offices worldwide.
