SaaS is 'great for many applications, tough for others'

The use of software-as-a-service (SaaS) is an increasingly popular delivery method, yet a number of applications will undoubtedly struggle to make the leap if at all, according to a range of experts.

In an open question on ebizQ to fellow experts in the field of business management software, Francis Carden asked how many, and which, desktop programs would still be needed if SaaS became the default method of delivering software.

Andrew Smith, the managing director of One Degree, said that while he does not believe in everything being delivered via SaaS in the same fashion as project management software and online time billing, it can still work well for small and medium-sized businesses.

He continued: "However, you will always need certain applications on the desktop because they are more secure, or provide a better user experience. For me, anything that holds sensitive data has to be kept in house."

Recently, Sara Yirrell, the editor of CRN, noted how SaaS could result in the end of fixed-term software licensing, meaning that a number of companies must "adapt or die".
