Small IT companies 'need support to thrive'

Smaller IT institutions in the UK are the backbone of the UK's technology industry and must be supported, according to an expert.

Carrie Hartnell, the head of industry strategy at Intellect, the UK's IT industry association, said that while many cannot do without the investment of larger organisations, they are the basis for good economic performance in the UK.

Many are already benefiting from an investment in hosted software such as project management tools, which is cutting the budgets for use on other things.

Ms Hartnell continued: "We in the UK need to make sure we have got support, the ecosystem and the whole network that will allow small companies to develop, grow and then remain sustainable and not just sell to large companies or remain at the size they are."

It follows a study which discovered that eight of the ten top software and internet sector's research and development spenders increased that spending during the recession, according to analysis by global management consulting organisation Booz & Company.
