LA adopts cloud computing system

Los Angeles City Council has announced that it is now in a partnership with Google to outsource its email systems in a deal worth around $7.2 million (£4.4 million).

The change signals another big step in the popularity of cloud computing as a means of delivering software, which is also used to supply organisations with such systems as resource scheduling software and customer relationship management.

Many have touted it as the most significant gain for software-as-a-service (SaaS), given that Los Angeles is the biggest city in the US.

Furthermore, it also signals a vast departure from legacy systems held on servers owned by the local government organisation, which previously had contracts with Microsoft for its email.

However, others are cautious about the future, with David Linthicum of the Intelligent Enterprise Blog stating: "While it could be too early to tell if LA will be successful using Google as their email and office automation solution of choice, this is a huge test case for cloud computing, specifically SaaS."
