SaaS dealers 'must communicate software licence rules' to consumers

Businesses dealing in software-as-a-service programs such as online time billing and resource scheduling software ought to highlight their protocols surrounding software licensing, it is said.

Chris Holland, the vice-president of software rights management at SafeNet, said that while the on-demand and virtualisation vendors promote their IT management benefits, the licensing issue is unsolved for many UK organisations.

This is leading a large percentage of them to steer away from business management software, he added, even though it could be delivering some huge benefits.

Mr Holland concluded: "However software is delivered, you need to know how it is licensed, how to manage your licences and what the cost and security implications are. If the suppliers do not communicate this clearly to potential customers, the widespread adoption of the solutions will be limited."

His comments follow a study by his organisation, which found that 68 per cent of UK organisations fear that introducing new technologies could add hidden complexities to software licence management.
