Strategy is 'central to SaaS adoption' in 2010

Many firms are wanting to ensure their use of software-as-a-service (SaaS) is successful, according to an expert.

Liz Herbert, a senior analyst at Forrester Research, explained to ZDNet that there are three levels of maturity that an organisation must consider if it is to adopt a SaaS solution in the future.

She said of companies looking into the growing importance of SaaS: "They want to better understand existing SaaS solutions that are being used in their firms today - where, when, why - and also understand when it makes sense to proactively push SaaS as the best overall solution."

Ms Herbert noted that the maturity of the application area shows that many organisations do not offer comparable functionality to on-premise solutions, meaning it may not be the best offering for them.

Furthermore, the organisation itself must be scrutinised, looking into the partnerships it has already forged and how adept it is at providing the software system.

Additionally, SaaS must be assessed for its compatibility with in-office browsers, as many processes may require additional bandwidth which might not be taken into account.

This week, Gartner revealed that sales of SaaS are up by 18 per cent on the previous year.
