Gartner: SaaS revenue grows by 18%

Global software-as-a-service (SaaS) revenue will likely reach $7.5 billion (£4.5 billion) in 2009, marking a 17.7 per cent increase on 2008 revenues, according to Gartner.

The global IT consultancy firm said that the market will see consistent growth through 2013 when revenue will hit over $14 billion (£8 billion) for the enterprise application markets.

Sharon Mertz, research director at Gartner, noted that the use of the likes of resource scheduling software and online time billing is extending across regions of the globe very quickly.

She explained that adoption of the on-demand model has grown as vendors have extended services through a number of partner offerings, alliances and the offer and promotion of user application development through platform-as-a-service abilities.

Ms Mertz continued: "Although usage and adoption is still evolving, deployment of SaaS still varies between the enterprise application markets and within specific market segments because of buyer demand and applicability of the solution."

It follows the prediction by Gartner earlier this autumn that cloud computing services would become one of the top ten strategic technologies of 2010.
